Miyajima is a popular tourist destination in Hiroshima Prefecture.
While 14% of the island is a World Heritage Site and the natural attractions include shrines, temples, and mountains and the sea, the food is also truly fascinating.

The most well-known specialties of Miyajima are conger eels and oysters.
My wife and I were looking forward to trying these specialties on this trip to Miyajima.

We had a bowl of conger eel and fried oysters at a restaurant called “Yosakoi”.

We were very pleased with the conger eel donburi and fried oysters at Yosakoi

After visiting all the tourist spots, we headed to the shopping street to have dinner.
We were excited to try Miyajima’s specialties, but we had a big miscalculation.

All the stores were closed.

It was around 5:30 p.m., but all the restaurants were closed by 5:00 p.m. “We’ve come all the way to Miyajima,” we were told.
We walked around to look for a place to eat since we had come all the way to Miyajima, but all the restaurants we thought looked good were closed.

Hungry and tired of walking, we stood on the edge of despair.

Then we suddenly remembered that we had seen a restaurant when we were walking along the beach on the way there.
With our last hope, we headed for the beach.

When we arrived at the location of the restaurant along the beach, the lights were on inside the restaurant on the second floor, and we could see some customers.

We are deeply relieved and go up the stairs without hesitation.

Since the restaurant is on the second floor, we have a great view. It is a wonderful location with the ocean right in front of it.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant is somewhere between an izakaya and a teishoku-ya.

We had already decided what we wanted to eat. Conger eel and oysters.

We decided to share them,

Anago donburi (conger eel on top of rice bowl)
Fried Oyster Gozen

to share.

Anago Donburi

Anago donburi is a bowl of rice topped with conger eel, one of Miyajima’s specialties.

Anago has a lighter fat than eel, and its elegant, light taste is perfectly combined with the sweet and spicy sauce.
It is the kind of bowl of rice you can’t stop eating.

In addition to the bowl of rice, the dish comes with soup, pickled vegetables, and garnish.

Fried Oyster Gozen

This is the Fried Oyster Gozen.
In addition to fried oysters, sashimi and tofu are also included in the set.

When you take a bite of the fried oyster, the juices filled with flavor overflow from the inside.
It is so good that you can’t help but chew it slowly with your eyes closed.

Aside from the fried oysters, I found the tofu to be surprisingly tasty. The oyster soy sauce poured over the tofu was also delicious, making for a satisfying set.

Miyajima Beer

The long-awaited beer.
I had decided not to drink until I had finished praying, so this was the beer I had been longing for.

I had seen this Miyajima beer all over the island, and to be honest, I had been wanting to drink it for a long time.

Being a pale ale, it has a refreshing citrusy flavor.
It was well chilled, but it was a beer that would also taste great at room temperature.

Conclusion

Throughout this trip, oysters were delicious not only at Miyajima, but also in Hiroshima City.

In Miyajima, in addition to the fried oysters we had at “Yosakoi,” we also had grilled oysters in the open air.

I had them with soy sauce, which was also very tasty. When the local food tastes good, it makes the trip more enjoyable, doesn’t it?

It is good to have delicious seafood in a place facing the sea.
It was a very satisfying dinner with local specialties.
