Hiroshima Mihara Trip.
We went to Sagishima, the main destination on the first day of our trip.

Sagishima is a remote island in the Seto Inland Sea, belonging to Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture.
Despite being a remote island, it is easily accessible, taking as little as 20 minutes from Mihara Station. It is also called “the island closest to the Shinkansen station in Japan.

I had planned to stay on the island for about two hours, but the first beach I visited was so beautiful that I couldn’t leave, so I extended my stay by an hour to three hours.
I was still so happy when I left that I felt like I couldn’t stay away. I loved Sagishima.

Isn’t it wonderful to be able to experience a remote island so easily?
You can visit the island for a few hours during your trip, so I recommend you include it in your Mihara travel plans.

In this article, I will write about the attractions around the port of Sagishima, centering on the beautiful beach “Onoura Beach”.
I will use many photos to show you the charm of Sagishima.

Sagijima! A boat trip to a remote island in Mihara

To get to Sagijima from Mihara Station, you need to go from Mihara Station to Mihara Port, and then take a ferry or high-speed boat.
From Mihara Station to Mihara Port is a 5-minute walk, and from Mihara Port to Sagijima takes just over 10 minutes by high-speed boat, for a total of 20 minutes. This is the reason why we mentioned above that the island can be visited in as little as 20 minutes.

However, you need to pay attention to the time of the boat. Also, there are some precautions such as bicycles can only be carried on the ferry, so please refer to the above article for more information about this.
I also write about the view from the boat, where you can see the beautiful archipelago of islands in the Seto Inland Sea.

Now, when you arrive at Sagijima, “Welcome, welcome to Sagijima! and “Welcome to Sagijima! Sagijima?
When I was asking about Sagijima at the tourist information center in Mihara Station, I saw “Sagijima” written on the boat’s timetable, so I asked, “Are Sagijima and Sagijima the same island?” I asked him if Sagijima and Sagijima are the same island.

It seems that they are the same, just different in notation.
It is often written “Sagijima,” but sometimes it is written “Sagijima,” so be careful not to be misled.

We said goodbye to the ferry in our hearts and started our tour of Sagijima.
The short boat ride did not feel like much, but once we landed on the island, we felt a strong sense of being on a remote island.

Lush trees and the almost emerald green color of the sea.
As I gazed at the scenery, people quickly dispersed from the harbor area. Your body begins to feel the atmosphere of a remote island that is not touristy and close to the bare bones.

I use the sightseeing map of Sagishima that I received at the ticket window next to the ticket machine at Mihara Port as a guide for my island tour.
At this point, however, we were thinking of a two-hour stay. Since we would be touring on foot without bicycles, we would not be able to move around much.

So we decided to head for “Onoura Beach” which seemed to be located near the port as far as we could see on the sightseeing map.

We couldn’t leave the beautiful beach! To Onoura Beach

Turn right at the “Minato Teahouse” near the port.
Looking at the map, it seems that all we have to do is go straight down the road.

Once you know that all you have to do is go straight down the road, you can put away the map and start exploring.
It is not a must to go to “Onoura Beach,” and it is interesting in such a place to go in the direction you want to go.

I was curious about all the information I could see. Even the battered dog house in the yard looks beautiful.

And then I saw this view.
What a beautiful beach. It looks like this is Onoura Beach.

Much better than I had imagined. Yes, this place is very nice.
I feel like I’m on vacation, something I couldn’t feel before 30 minutes ago.

The beach is beautiful, the trees are lush, and I can hear the insects. All I can hear is the sound of insects and waves.
As soon as I set foot on Sagishima, I immediately felt the calm and gentle atmosphere of the island.

This beach is said to be the first “beach therapy” in Japan.
So I sat down in a corner of the beach and started the therapy by myself.

The beer I bought at a convenience store near the port of Mihara.
I saw many vending machines selling soft drinks, but there were no convenience stores, so I recommend that you buy some before boarding the boat.

As I watched the waves roll in and out of the water, I thought back over the day so far.
The weather in Hiroshima, which was much hotter than Tokyo on this day, had beaten me down, and in fact, I had been feeling rather battered before I arrived on the island.

That was already a physical condition that was quickly recovered in just half an hour or so.
Anyway, the sun was shining and it was hot, but the sea was so beautiful that I couldn’t resist going into the sea.

I ended up knee-deep in the sea for a petit swim.
In front of me was another remote island, KoSagishima. Once again, I realize that I am on a remote island. It is hard to believe that just an hour ago we were at a station where the Shinkansen bullet train also passes through.

To “Minato no Oka Park” where a pavilion stands at the top of a small hill.

The beach was so pleasant that I honestly wanted to stay there for the rest of the day, but the sightseeing map seemed to indicate that there was more to see, so I decided to resume my tour of the island.
At this point, we extended our planned 2-hour stay to 3 hours.

Once back at the harbor, we headed for “Harbor Hill Park. The park is located on a small hill, and apparently there is a pavilion at the top.
According to the description on the sightseeing map, the pavilion was “a spot where you can take a break while watching the ships passing by offshore. This is definitely something I would like to see.

After continuing along the road from the harbor for a while and entering the road to the right, you will see a stairway leading up the mountain on your right.

This is the approach to Koura Hachimangu Shrine.
Minato no Oka Park” is located at the top of the small mountain where this Koura Hachimangu Shrine is located.

As you ascend the stairs to Koura Hachimangu Shrine, you will see the Ubame Oak (Ubame Oak).
This oak is the biggest tree in the prefecture, and it is said that it is rare to find one of this size.

Koura Hachimangu Shrine is located at the top of the stairs.
At this shrine, visitors pray for a safe visit to Sagishima and for a good encounter on their future travels.

A path continues beside Koura Hachimangu Shrine, so we walk further up.

As you walk along, surrounded by the chirping of insects, you will see a red building ahead.

This must be the pavilion.
According to the sightseeing map, this area should be “Harbor Hill Park”.

When we entered the pavilion, we found that the name “Minato no Oka Park” was written on the pavilion.
Good, I was not mistaken. I thought so, but there was a problem.

Yes, the pavilion was surrounded by trees, so I could not see the view.
We had been looking forward to this spot where we could “take a rest while watching the ships passing by offshore. …… But it’s okay, though, because the trees growing as they wish are also beautiful.

From the stairs leading to the top of the mountain, we had a panoramic view of the sea.
The unique scenery of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea is truly fascinating.

Going down the stairs near the pavilion, we came to a spot near the harbor.
If you want to go to “Harbor Hill Park,” this stairway is a shortcut.

Finally, spend some time at the embankment of Saginaw Harbor.

I was planning to spend some time at the pavilion of “Harbor Hill Park” looking at the sea until it was time for the return boat, but I couldn’t see the sea from the pavilion, so I decided to spend some time near the harbor.

Sagi Harbor is where ferries and high-speed boats dock.
We decided to spend time until the boat at the embankment in that harbor.

When there is an embankment, as a fishing enthusiast, I want to take a look down there even if I don’t fish.
When we peeked in, we could even see the shadow of a rather large fish.

If it is the time for ships to take off and land, ferries and high-speed boats will pass right in front of you.
This is a view that is not often seen.

We spent some time until it was time for the boats to leave, and then boarded a high-speed boat headed for Mihara Port.
On the way home, I felt the joy of knowing a good place. At the same time, I also felt a strong sense of loneliness, not wanting to leave yet.

Conclusion

While I was idly gazing at the sea, I received a call from a client. I took out my computer and spent some time working. I was worried about the signal for a moment, but my cell phone worked fine.

There are few stores on the island, so you need to buy some things near Mihara Port, but if it is easy to get to from the center of the city and the signal is good, I would definitely like to stay overnight next time.

If you have time to spare, you can visit Sagishima, “the closest island in Japan to the Shinkansen station”.
If you ever visit Mihara, why not include it in your travel plans? It is a recommended island where you can easily experience a remote island.
