Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture.
The historic island, 14% of which is a World Heritage Site, is best known for Itsukushima Shrine, which is of course beautiful and highly recommended, but there is another place you should visit.

That is Mt.Misen.

Misen is said to have been founded by Kukai (Kobo Daishi), and it is the place where Hirobumi Ito praised “the true value of one of the three most scenic spots in Japan lies in the view at the top.
The view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking and a must-see.

Sightseers will probably use the ropeway to climb the mountain, but the view from the ropeway is also spectacular.
The beautiful view from the historic Misen Main Hall at the top of the mountain and the Miyajima Misen Observation Rest Area, an observation deck at the top of the mountain, is worth seeing.

If you visit Miyajima, you should definitely take the time to visit this place.

The spectacular view from Mt.Misen

The first place tourists head to when visiting Miyajima is the Otorii (Grand Gate) floating in the sea at Itsukushima Shrine.
The entrance to the ropeway to Mt.Misen

Since you will need time to climb the mountain, we recommend that you visit Misen first and then go around the rest of the mountain.

Take the ropeway to the top of Mt.Misenへ

Passing by Itsukushima Shrine, go to the back and you will find the ropeway.

It is not far from the entrance of the ropeway, but you will have to climb a steep slope, so it is easier to take a free bus from here to the entrance.

f:id:islog:20151231003137j:plain

The bus is not a big one, so it was full.

The road between the entrance and the seaside is not only a roadway for the buses, but also a promenade along the river.
Since the return trip is downhill, I recommend walking along the promenade. You will be healed by the nature.

f:id:islog:20151231003144j:plain

The distance is short, so the bus will soon arrive at the ropeway entrance.

Purchase a ticket and board the ropeway. The round trip is 1,800 yen.

f:id:islog:20151231003153j:plain

The ropeway is relatively small. As soon as you get on the ropeway, you will be climbing up a steep slope.

f:id:islog:20151231003201j:plain

The view is spectacular!
However, I was frozen because I am not good at heights.

f:id:islog:20151231003209j:plain

After about 10 minutes, we arrived at the exit of the ropeway. It is quite high.
I was relieved that the ropeway was finally over, but to my surprise, it seemed that I needed to make a transfer.

f:id:islog:20151231003217j:plain

This time, I crossed to the other side of the mountain rather than going up.

It takes about 15 minutes from the ground to reach the summit.

f:id:islog:20151231003242j:plain

Misen is dotted with power spots.
After getting off the ropeway, you will walk along the mountain path.

After getting off the ropeway, climb the mountain path lush with greenery

f:id:islog:20151231003251j:plain

From the exit of the ropeway, you will climb up the mountain path.
Although it is a mountain path, it is well-maintained, so it is a pleasant hiking experience.

f:id:islog:20151231003259j:plain

However, there are many uphill slopes, so it may be hard if you are not sufficiently athletic.

What surprised me was that many of the women walking along the path were wearing heels.
Although the path is well maintained, it is still a mountain path. It is dangerous, so please wear sneakers.

f:id:islog:20151231003308j:plain

The mountain paths are in lush greenery, so walking along them seems to cleanse the mind.

Also, because of the high altitude, the scenery is spectacular, and the exhaustion will be wiped away when you see the spectacular view of the Seto Inland Sea.

f:id:islog:20151231003316j:plain

After a 15-minute walk from the ropeway exit, you will see the plaza where the main hall of Mt.Misen

Yazan Main Hall and Reihi-Do (fire hall)

f:id:islog:20151231003325j:plain

This is the main hall of Mt.Misen
It is said that when Taira no Kiyomori built Itsukushima Shrine, he erected this Gozan Shrine as the inner shrine, which enshrines the three Munakata Goddesses.

f:id:islog:20151231003351j:plain

Across from the main hall is the Kietsuno-Reikado, a sacred fire hall with an “unquenchable sacred fire” (kietsuno-reikado).
This sacred fire was kindled when Kukai did ascetic training on Miyajima Island. It has burned day and night for approximately 1,200 years, and is said to be a sacred fire that has never been extinguished.

f:id:islog:20151231003400j:plain

There is also a sacred water called “Ochagama-no-yu” (hot water from a tea kettle) in the sacred fire hall, which is effective against all illnesses.
My wife and I, who visited the temple together, were grateful for the water.

The temple is also called a “sacred place for lovers” because of the fire that cannot be extinguished.

Miyajima Misen Observation Rest Area, an observatory with a spectacular view

At the top of Mt.Misen Misen is the Miyajima Misen Observation Rest Area, an observatory.
It was renewed at the end of July 2014.

From the side of the Reihi-Do (fire hall), take the stairs up to the observatory.
The slope is steeper than the previous path, so if you are not a confident climber, it may be better to stop here.

f:id:islog:20151231003408j:plain

On the way, there are places where you can pass under rocks, and you will encounter views that you would not normally see.

After a 20-minute walk from the main hall, the observatory at the top of the mountain comes into view.
It would be better to allow an hour for the round trip between the main hall and the observatory.

f:id:islog:20151231003416j:plain

From the observatory, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the spectacular scenery.
Climbing the mountain is hard enough to strain the legs and back, but the view makes the effort worthwhile.

Abundant greenery and the Seto Inland Sea.
No wonder Hirobumi Ito said, “The true value of one of the three most scenic spots in Japan lies in the view from the top.

f:id:islog:20151231003423j:plain

As the name “Miyajima Misen Observation Rest Area” suggests, there is a space below the observatory where visitors can rest their feet.

We took a rest here, too.
The breeze felt good, and there were many people lying down and taking a rest.

Conclusion

Many people climbed up to the observatory, but everyone seemed to be tired.
If you want to go up to the top, it is better to wear comfortable shoes and leave your luggage in a locker at the ferry terminal.

As for me, I felt that my body, which had been feeling sluggish from the city, became lighter and lighter as I climbed up the mountain.
Perhaps the mountains and God gave me strength. My legs were sore, though.

Whatever the case may be, I recommend the 360-degree view from the observatory.
Even if you don’t climb to the top of the mountain, the view from the ropeway is also beautiful, and the air on the mountain is clean and clean, creating a power spot atmosphere that will give you strength.

If you visit Miyajima, be sure to visit Mt.Misen.
