The specialty of Mihara, Hiroshima is octopus.
The Mihara City Fisheries Cooperative Association has branded the octopus caught in Mihara as “Mihara Yassa Tako” (Mihara Yassa Octopus).

This time, I participated in a monitoring tour organized by the Mihara Tourist Association, during which we were served a dish made with Mihara Yassa Tako (octopus).
Moreover, we were served the octopus after the takotsubo fishing experience. It is not every day that you get to eat octopus dishes after fishing in an octopus pot.

The octopus we were served was delicious!
The fresh octopus sashimi, the octopus rice soaked with the flavor of octopus, and the octopus tempura with the whole leg deep-fried but still soft. …… It may sound like a cliché, but it was the most delicious octopus I have ever eaten.

Octopus is sometimes caught by fishing, so I used to prepare it and eat it fresh, but the Mihara octopus I had this time was by far the tastiest. ……
I guess it depends on the fishing method called “tako tsubo” (octopus pot) fishing, which does not put a burden on the octopus, and the quality and processing method of the octopus itself.

So, this time, we enjoyed octopus dishes at “Mihara Yassa Octopus”! This time, we will enjoy octopus dishes at “Mihara Yassa Tako”!

“Mihara Yasa Tako” at Mihara City Fishery Cooperative Association

The Mihara Tourist Association sponsored a monitoring tour that started with an octopus jar fishing experience.
It was a valuable experience to accompany and witness the whole process of fishing, which is not often seen.

For more information on octopus jar fishing, please refer to the above article or video.

As mentioned above, the Mihara City Fisheries Cooperative Association brands the octopus caught in Mihara under the name “Mihara Yassa Octopus”.
The name is said to be a reference to the local traditional event, the Mihara Yassa Festival.

After returning from the octopus jar fishing, the tour participants will enjoy octopus dishes made with “Mihara Yassa Octopus” at the Mihara City Fishery Cooperative Association.
We were very happy because we were hungry after the octopus pot fishing. A meal after physical exertion is delicious, after all! Well, we were just on the boat, not doing anything in particular.

Freshness is excellent! Crunchy “octopus sashimi”

Now, we enjoyed octopus dishes! So, this time, we got three dishes.

First, the octopus sashimi.
The octopus we usually eat is usually well-boiled octopus. I am looking forward to it.

When I think of octopus sashimi, I imagine thinly sliced octopus like puffer fish, but here it is a long slice of octopus.
It is very difficult to process octopus sashimi, isn’t it? I have never handled it, but I have heard that it is difficult to remove the skin.

You can feel its elasticity just by grabbing it with chopsticks.
The translucent white flesh is beautiful and firm and shiny.

When you try the octopus sashimi, you will find that it is very chewy! At first it feels hard, but as you get used to it, the more you chew, the more you can feel the delicious flavor.
The more you chew, the more you can feel the deliciousness. As the person next to me said, it makes me want sake.

The day before, I also had a raw octopus at Rokubun Sen, but the one at Rokubun Sen had a suction cup. The octopus from Rokubunsen had suckers on it, which gave it a delicious bouncy texture.

Without the suckers, you cannot feel the popping texture, but it may be better without the suckers to taste the octopus flavor.
There are many ways to enjoy octopus sashimi. Octopus is a very deep dish.

“Octopus rice” soaked with the flavor of octopus

Next is octopus rice, the iron plate of octopus dishes.
Originally, fishermen chopped octopus they had just caught on the boat and cooked it with rice.

The aroma of octopus soup stock that can be felt from the rising steam whets the appetite.
The rice, stained slightly red with octopus soup stock, is also beautiful and looks delicious from the outside.

The octopus rice is filled with many pieces of octopus.
The good aroma of octopus that escapes into your nostrils when you put it in your mouth. The tasty flavor of the octopus can be felt as you chew the rice. It is a dish that you want to chew well and eat well.

The octopus flavor and deliciousness soaks into the rice and is delicious!

Mihara Yassa Octopus” is quick-frozen at the Mihara City Fishery Cooperative right after it is landed, so the flavor is preserved and the flesh is soft and easy to eat.
Yes, it is delicious, the Mihara Yassa Octopus.

Deep-fried whole octopus leg “octopus tempura”

Last but not least, the octopus tempura is made by deep frying a whole octopus leg.
In addition to its impressive appearance, this octopus tempura was particularly tasty and left a lasting impression on me.

In fact, this octopus tempura is sold at a store in the Mihara City Fishermen’s Cooperative Association.
It is sold every Sunday from 6:00 AM, which I thought was too early! But after tasting the octopus tempura, I was convinced that it was worth getting up early for.

It was not Sunday, but the restaurant was open especially for the tour.
The octopus tempura was being deep-fried one after another right in front of our eyes. This must be delicious.

This is the octopus tempura, a specialty of the Mihara City Fishermen’s Cooperative Association.
After all, freshly fried tempura is the best. I had the one I had just seen being deep-fried.

Now, let’s take a bite of the big octopus tempura.
I imagined that it would be difficult to bite through the octopus, but the octopus meat is really soft and easy to bite through.

The taste is superb! The more you bite into the crispy batter, the more the octopus oozes flavor. Too good!
There were three whole fried octopus legs, but I ate them all up in one sitting.

With this kind of dish, the flesh is often too tough to chew through and all the contents come out first, but this does not happen with this octopus tempura, as the octopus is soft and tender.
If you go to Mihara, you should definitely try this dish, and I highly recommend it.

Conclusion

Monitor tour organized by Mihara Tourism Association.
The octopus dish we had after the octopus jar fishing experience was already an exquisite dish.

The octopus of Mihara is a specialty of the city, and it is all delicious and tasty.
I had never had such an octopus-filled meal before, but the experience was enough to make me fall in love with octopus cuisine itself.
